2015 NWYCFFA

2014 Academy 010

As we approach the 2014 holiday season, now would be the time to be thinking of gifts for your children, grandchildren and any other youth you think might like to learn about fly fishing and conservation.  To qualify for The Academy, the applicant, boy or girl, 12-16 years old, must write an essay explaining why they would like to attend The Academy.  A letter of recommendation is also required, written by their science teacher or school counselor.  The dates for the 2015 WSCFFF and WCTU sponsored event are Sunday, June 21 – Saturday June 27th.  The weeklong event is hosted by the Olympia TU Chapter, South Sound Fly Fishing Club and the Puget Sound Fly Fishers of Tacoma.  The Academy will be held again at The Gwinwood Conference Center on Hicks Lake in Lacey, WA.  The youth reside in cabins with Ghillies (counselors), fly fishing gear is provided along with fly tying materials, all meals are included.  Cost for the whole week is $275, there are sponsorships available.  No one will be turned away because of funds.  To learn more about the Academy, go to www.nwycffa.com or our Facebook page.  The application is available on our website or contact Mike Clancy @ [email protected]

This is a life rewarding experience for our youth to learn conservation and the basics of fly fishing.  The youth of today, are the guardians of the future of our sport of fly fishing.

Education 2012

During 2011 a variety of educational opportunities were provided including four fly tying classes (2 beginner and 2 intermediate), spey casting and an all-day trout and steelhead clinic in Forks.

Looking ahead to 2012 we want to provide some more fly tying (perhaps shorter sessions focusing on one or more of our traditional outings) and a casting clinic. I’d like to hold one or more small on-the-water clinics like we did in Forks. We could really use some input from you on what you might be interested in. Do you want to have tying instruction around a specific type of fly? Would you like to see a certain type of experiential clinic? Drop us an email or comment on

this post so we can include your ideas in our 2012 education planning.

Intermediate Fly Tying Class

An Intermediate Fly Tying Class is being planned for
October. Janet Schimpf will be teaching intermediate fly
tying for up to 15 tiers and the class will begin sometime
during the week of October 10th.

This evening class will run for 4 weeks and will probably be from 6 to 8 p.m.
We are working on a location right now (probably the
clubhouse on Black Lake where we held last fall’s auction)
so haven’t landed on what night of the week this class will
occur. The fee for this four week class will be somewhere
between $50 and $60 and will include all tying supplies.

If you want to sign up for this class contact us or give me a call. I will have a signup list at our August 16th
picnic. I will also have the signup at our September
meeting but expect the class will be full by that time.

Also if you have particular types of flies you’d like to see
taught in this class let we know so I can pass it on to Janet.
